Share your views on smoking on our Campus
Employers on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus have launched a survey to understand your views on smoking, with a view to creating a single set of rules around smoking and vaping for the whole site.
The Campus is Cambridge’s biggest employment site, where over 22,000 people work and more than 40,000 visit every day across its hospitals and research organisations. Each organisation on the Campus is responsible for setting and enforcing its own rules on smoking; Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the biggest employer on the Campus, implemented a smoke-free policy in January 2014, prohibiting smoking or vaping inside any of the Trust’s buildings and on the hospital grounds. Royal Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has also been smoke-free since moving to the Campus in 2019. Others have less defined policies, which can make enforcing them difficult.
Smoking is a leading cause of preventable death in England. It is linked to diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and respiratory conditions – for both smokers and those exposed to second-hand smoke.
Any conversation about smoking also needs to acknowledge that many people smoke due to addiction, stress, or other social factors.
That’s why the survey has been launched to understand different perspectives on what the rules should be on smoking across the site. The project is run by CBC Limited, a non-profit partnership of the health, research, life science and education organisations on the Campus, the largest centre of medical research and health science in Europe.
Fill in the survey now, which should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete, and ends with the chance to win a £30 Love Cambridge Voucher.
Nick Kirby, Managing Director of CBC Ltd, said:
“Smoking is the leading cause of preventable ill health and premature death in the UK. As a centres of excellence in healthcare, innovation and life sciences, the organisations working on the campus are committed to reducing smoking-related harm. We also understand the challenges with addiction associated with smoking.
“Over the coming months, a new campus smoking policy will bring coherence across shared spaces on campus, promote access to smoking cessation services and explore how we can harness our research capabilities in this area. We are keen to understand views from patients, staff and local residents to help inform this new campus-wide policy.”
